Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring (gel)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Cream cheese frosting (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  3. In another bowl, mix sugar and vegetable oil until well combined. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla extract and red food coloring. Gradually stir in buttermilk.
  4. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined; avoid overmixing.
  5. Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely. Frost with cream cheese frosting.
