Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 ½ cups warm water (around 110°F)
- ⅓ cup baking soda
- 2 tsp coarse sea salt (plus extra for topping)
- 1–2 drops green food coloring
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and yeast; let sit for 5 minutes until frothy. Add flour and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Punch down the dough and divide it into eight pieces. Roll each piece into long ropes and shape into pretzels.
- In a pot, boil four cups of water; carefully add baking soda. Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds before transferring to parchment-lined baking sheets.
- Brush each pretzel with an egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for about 12 minutes until golden brown.
