Ingredients

For the Tuna Filling
  • 2 cans tuna in water drained
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise adjust to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard optional for extra flavor
  • 1 stalk celery finely diced
  • 1/4 cup red onion finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper to taste
For Assembling the Sandwich
  • 8 slices whole grain bread or bread of choice
  • 4 leaves romaine lettuce washed and dried
  • 1 tomato sliced ripe
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese optional

Method

Prepare the Tuna Filling
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard (if using), diced celery, diced red onion, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Use a fork to mix everything together until well combined. The tuna should be flaky and the ingredients evenly distributed. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Assemble the Sandwich
  1. Take one slice of bread and layer a leaf of romaine lettuce on top. This will help prevent the bread from getting soggy.
  2. Spoon a generous amount of the tuna filling onto the lettuce.
  3. Add a slice of tomato on top of the tuna filling. If using cheese, place a slice of cheddar on top of the tomato.
  4. Top with another slice of bread. Press down gently to secure the sandwich.
  5. Repeat the process for the remaining sandwiches.
  6. Cut each sandwich in half diagonally for easier eating and serve on a plate.
